An Evening for Hospice

Raises $18,000 for Hospice

For 18 straight years residents of the McCook area have opened their hearts and their pocketbooks in sponsorships and gifts to Community Hospital’s hospice services. This year was no exception, as the Sunday, November 22 gala event at the Knights of Columbus Hall net $18,000 over expenses for a fabulous evening.

The Knights of Columbus Hall was decorated to depict the theme, “Angels Among Us.” The tables were adorned with beautiful centerpieces of wreaths and metallic angles that were later sold, adding to the net proceeds. Two lighted trees were decorated with more than 100 silver angels purchased in memory or in honor of loved ones.

On the jointly sad and festive evening the crowd was taken through the short life of Audrey Ann, daughter of Erica Fish and Sam Haberman. Audrey, stricken with the terminal disease of Metachromatic Leukodystrophy packed a lot of living in her two and a half years. Ultimately she succumbed to the disease. Erica and Sam are forever grateful for the care and support their entire family received from Community Hospital’s Hospice team.

On a higher note, the crowd delighted in the good natured kidding of emcee, Cal Siegfried as he took contestants holding one of ten spots vying for one of four Mystery Packages. The ten contestants soon narrowed to three as one by one was eliminated. The final mystery package was auctioned for a high bid of $1,700. Only then were the players able to open their boxes to reveal what they had won. The big winners were:

Lena Koebel of Culbertson, won a trip to New York, co-sponsored by Community Hospital and McCook Clinic.

Barbie Long of McCook won a summer stay in Breckenridge donated by Ron and Kellie Soden and Shirley Blank.

Brian Smith of McCook won 12 months of $100 gift cards donated by Wal-Mart Super Center of McCook.

Dr. Wayne Watkins of McCook won a $500 Willow Creek Meats Gift Certificate and a Green Mountain grill and spices donated by Norm and Sharon Timmerman and VK Electronics.

Additionally, more than$4,500 was raised through the sale of 26 donated silent auction packages.

Keeping with the theme, guests were served a meal of angel hair pasta with roasted chicken and a choice of marinara or Alfredo sauce catered by This or That Food Truck & Catering. Guests were served by Community Hospital staff volunteering their time.

The evening concluded with the beautiful voices of Barbie and Michael Long, who sang for the second year for the hospice event. They were followed by a final piece, “Angels Among Us,” performed by Brad Randel accompanied by his wife, Adrienne.

Terri Shipshock and Dannette Kloepping of Community Hospital Health Foundation wish to express their thank you to all who participate in this great event. Together we make hospice care possible for the people of our region.
