A Time to Heal: New Cancer Support Group

July 13, 2015

McCook, Nebraska—Are you a cancer survivor or a caregiver of a cancer survivor? If so, and you are looking for some extra support, please consider joining Community Hospital’s new cancer support group, A Time to Heal, which begins Monday, September 14. The 12-week, 12-session group includes lectures, discussion, exercise, support and fun! The support group will be at Community Hospital in the Prairie View A conference room from 4:00-6:30 p.m.

A Time To Heal is a holistic cancer rehabilitation program for survivors and their caregivers. A survivor is anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer. The program helps participants learn about regaining physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological health; practice a variety of anxiety management and coping techniques and receive encouragement, validation, and support from other participants as well as the professional staff. It is open to both men and women of all ages, and of all kinds of cancer.

There is no cost to support group members. Through a grant from the Community Hospital Health Foundation, the hospital will provide to each attendee a binder of learning material and also a music CD, and some exercise equipment, including an exercise band, ball, and handkerchief.

Facilitator for the support group is Hanah Swanhorst, Community Hospital social worker. She, along with two Community Hospital nurses who work in the chemotherapy department, participated in a two-day training for the A Time To Heal support group that was held by the creators of the group, Kay Ryan and Stephanie Koraleski.

Hanah received her undergraduate degree in Social Work at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and her Master’s in Clinical Social Work at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She is a provisionally licensed mental health practitioner and a provisionally certified master’s social worker.

For more information about the new support group, or if interested in joining, please contact Hanah Swanhorst at Community Hospital by calling (308) 344-8221.
