Celebrating Home Care and Hospice Month

November 10, 2016

McCook, Nebraska—Community Hospital’s home health and hospice agency, Community HealthCare and Hospice is celebrating Home Care and Hospice Month in November. The agency provides homecare and hospice services in a seven-county area including Chase, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Hayes, Hitchcock and Red Willow counties.

It employs ten employees, including four field registered nurses, two licensed practical nurses, two certified nursing assistants, a clinical coordinator and an office coordinator. A new director, Barbie Long, RN BSN, will be joining the department in December.

Community HealthCare and Hospice provides skilled nursing care, home health aides, medical social services, hospice care, homemaker/chore services, speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, Lifeline, registered dietitian services and diabetic education. A nurse is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Hospice volunteers play an important role in meeting the needs of hospice patients. They send out Care Notes to patients and their families, spend time with hospice patients and help to run errands. This month, they will be packing Thanksgiving baskets for hospice patients, each including food items for a Thanksgiving meal.

Home care and hospice are poised to play a key role in coming years. A wide range of forces is joining to push care away from nursing homes and drive it toward home and community-based care. Based on demography and dollars, experts agree that the destiny of health care lies in the home. The first of the 78 million baby boomers turned 65 last year, and the rest of the boomers will reach their golden years in the next two decades, making health care dollars grow even scarcer. As the silver tsunami sweeps on, the most important trend in health care is the shift from hospitals and nursing homes to home care, from treatment to proactive monitoring and care.
