Employees to Celebrate Wellness Week

June 21, 2013

McCook, Nebraska—Community Hospital employees are celebrating Wellness Week the last week in June by learning how to make healthy snacks, on-the-go-breakfasts, participating in afternoon exercise classes and more.

Those who want can take the No-Technology Challenge. For one week each employee can chart the time spent on Facebook, email, their personal smart phone, computer, watching television and other technology compared to the time spend in wellness activities such as gardening, exercising, relaxing and reading. The following week, they will be challenged to cut down the technology time and increase the wellness time. Those who turn in their charted hours will receive a Wellness for Life athletic shirt or a small monetary gift.

Other activities include:

  • Walking around campus during Monday’s lunch hour to “earn” lunch
  • One week of exercise classes in late afternoon on the hospital campus: Kickboxing, Tabata, Yoga, Just Two Minutes to Total Body, Boot Camp and also one Spin class at the YMCA
  • Free gym passes from local fitness clubs

Educational Sessions include:

  • Learning the importance of resistance training with personal trainer Sue Shaner
  • Learning the building blocks of a healthy on-the-go breakfast for busy employees
  • Learning about Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University Program
  • Learning how to put together a nutritious afternoon snack

Employees will also have the chance to win door prizes during the week.

The new Wellness for Life program was offered to Community Hospital employees in February. The program is accessible through any computer via a wellness portal for employees to log their aerobic miles, track health activities, and enter personal biometrics (weight, blood pressure). The site is interactive allowing employees to see how many credit points they can earn by attending health events, complete Health Challenges, such as the No-Technology Challenge, and participate in daily key health practices. Activity is rewarded with points. Those employees who meet the point goals receive cash each quarter. The biometric measurements help capture a total picture of the individual’s wellness. These measurements marry together specific lab test results, such as cholesterol, glucose, and A1C; waist measurement; blood pressure; height and weight.

Community Hospital is passionate about helping our employees understand what wellness is and how to achieve it in their own lives in order to better serve our community,” said Sarah Wolford, Wellness and Community Outreach Coordinator.

Area businesses may be interested in adopting the same wellness program for their employees, which can be tailored to meet their own wellness needs. To learn more about Community Hospital’s Wellness for Life program and how you or your business can be a part of it please call Wolford at 308-344-8550.
