February 27, 2018

McCook—Community Hospital in partnership with CHI Health Good Samaritan, in recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, have joined forces to provide the community with free colorectal cancer screening test kits in March. Kits may also be requested at Kits must be requested by March 31.

Participants will be mailed a home fecal occult blood test, with directions, that requires three consecutive stool samples. Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska will then analyze completed tests for microscopic signs of blood and inform participants and their primary care physicians of the results.

The Nebraska Cancer Registry reports that between 2010 and 2014, 4,550 Nebraska residents were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, while 1,714 Nebraska residents died from it. Although colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates in Nebraska and the United States follow a downward trend in recent years, both colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates are higher in Nebraska compared to the United States.
