McCook, Nebraska—Community Hospital is proud to be named as one of 12 Nebraska Safe Sleep Hospital Champions recently recognized by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

To be considered a Safe Sleep Hospital, the hospital must sign a pledge, create or update a Safe Sleep Policy, provide yearly education to hospital personnel, model safe sleep recommendations, and educate parents with evidence-based safe sleep materials.

“We are excited to be named as a Safe Sleep Hospital,” said Brandi Renner, BSN, and Community Hospital OB Coordinator. “As part of our Safe Sleep initiative Community Hospital has implemented the HALO SleepSack program with generous help from Community Hospital Foundation. The SleepSack is a wearable blanket to decrease the chance of a loose blanket obstructing airflow around the baby’s face,” she said. “Our hope is that by educating parents and modeling safe sleep guidelines in the hospital parents will continue to use safe sleep practices at home to keep their babies safe.”

Providing consistent training and education on safe sleep for all hospital personnel caring for children under a year old ensures the same safe sleep message is shared with the parents of more than 26,000 babies born in Nebraska every year. In 2012 and 2013, there were 45 sudden unexpected infant deaths in Nebraska. The deaths occurred in 16 different counties, covering both urban and rural areas. At least 35 occurred in an unsafe sleep environment.

The ABCs of Safe Sleep:

  • A – Your baby should always sleep alone.
  • B – Your baby should always sleep on his or her back.
  • C – Your baby should always sleep in a safe crib.
