Oncology Pain Management Conference for Patient Care Staff

August 28, 2013

McCook, Nebraska—Community Hospital is offering the second annual Genevieve Armstrong Campbell Conference for patient care staff related to managing pain for patients with cancer. “Managing Pain for the Oncology Patient in all Settings: An Educational Seminar for Patient Care Staff,” will be offered Thursday, September 12 and repeated on Friday, September 13 in Community Hospital’s Prairie View Conference Room.

The all-day program begins each day at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 4:15 p.m. Target audiences include those licensed as: ACHA-Resident Care, RN, LPN, EMS and other Allied Health Professionals.

Returning from last year to speak is Melanie H. Simpson, PhD, RN-BC, OCN, CHPN, the team coordinator for the Pain Management Resource Team at The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Attendees will learn about comprehensive pain assessment, different types of cancer pain and how patients describe pain to providers, pain management strategies as the patient progresses through the disease process, pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods to control pain, and educational points for providers to teach patients/families and caregivers regarding pain management.

Cost of the program is $70 if the registration is postmarked by September 4. After that, the cost increases to $80. CNE credits include: 7.8 CNE credits to RNs, LPNs and LMHTs, 7 contact hours for Resident Care staff, and 7.8 credit hours for EMS providers.

Partial funding for the conference is provided through the Community Hospital Health Foundation from the Genevieve Armstrong Campbell Memorial Fund. Called the Genevieve Armstrong Campbell Conference, the educational program honors a woman who practiced as a nurse at St. Catherine’s Hospital. She was widowed as a young wife when her military husband, a pilot, crashed his airplane in California. Her son, Carl (Butch), left part of his estate to the health foundation in honor of his mother.

The program is offered by Community Hospital in joint sponsorship with The University of Kansas Medical Center Area Health Education Center. Those interested in attending can call the AHEC NW Regional Office at 785-628-6128 for more information on the program. To register, call the Kansas University Medical Center Area Health Education Center Statewide Office at (620)235-4040.
