Patients Reminded of Point of Service Deposits

January 09, 2015

McCook, Nebraska—With the arrival of the new year and most patients having their deductibles restart in January, Community Hospital wants to remind outpatients that most will be asked to make a $75 “Point of Service” deposit upon arrival for an outpatient test, procedure or surgery. Point of Service deposits allow patients to make relatively small deposits in advance of care, and help them understand how their insurance will process the charges and plan for paying their share of the bill.

Some patients will be exempt from paying Point of Service deposits including inpatients, Medicare, Medicaid, Workman's Compensation and automobile liability patients.

The registration staff is equipped with software to validate patients’ insurance coverage, co-pays and see if their deductible has been met. This gives the patient a general idea of their financial responsibility for the services.

Laci Ingels, Community Hospital Patient Financial Counselor, said the Point of Service program was implemented to start the conversation about the cost of healthcare and how the patient will pay their bill. “We are here to educate patients about their insurance benefits and assist them in looking at options to pay for their healthcare,” she said. “In the past, many people have been very surprised to see how much they owed when their bill arrived. Our Point of Service program will help discuss payment earlier in the process so we can be proactive for the patient, especially if they need financial assistance,” she continued.
