Spinal Fusions Now Offered at Community Hospital

May 20, 2014

McCook, Neb.—A visiting orthopedic spinal surgeon is now performing spinal fusions at Community Hospital.

“Neck and back problems have long been a major source of pain and disability for the normal population,” according to David A. Benavides, M.D, orthopedic spinal surgeon. Goals of treatment have remained conservative with surgery held as a last resort, but surgical techniques continue to improve and evolve to minimize stay and maximize recovery.”

Benavides said that common problems including neck and arm pain as well as headaches may be attributable to spinal issues in particular around the neck area. Occasionally, low back pain, walking imbalance and overhead work may be a result of cervical issues.

Cervical surgeries to address arthritic or disk problems as well as low back procedures are now offered at Community Hospital by Dr. Benavides, a visiting board certified orthopedic spinal surgeon from Kearney. He has been practicing for more than twenty years and has maintained a clinic presence for seven years at Community Hospital’s Medical Specialists Center. He performs spinal stabilizing procedures that potentially reduce pain with the assistance of the local primary care providers keeping care close to home.

“I think that having the patient close to home gives them a stronger support unit to help in their recovery as well as having care by those who know them best, their regular doctor,” Dr. Benavides said. “Additionally, the support personnel, the facilities and the recent improvements, such as the hospital’s new surgery wing, create a wonderful environment to facilitate a successful outcome from the surgical procedures.”

Those suffering from neck or arm pain as well as headaches can find out more information or make an appointment with Dr. Benavides by calling Central Scheduling at the Community Hospital Medical Specialists Center at 308-344-8285.
