McCook, Neb. – Community Hospital is proud to announce that Misti Soderlund, RN, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Caring Kind Award, a recognition that celebrates staff members who exemplify compassion, excellence, and a commitment to patient-centered care.

Nominated by co-workers and chosen by Community Hospital employees and the 3E (Employee Engagement and Events Committee), her nomination reads:

“She exemplifies all qualities of the name, “caring kind”. She brings 20+ years of experience with her work and still it has not dampened her passion for nursing. She always there to lend a hand, help fill in the gaps when short staffed, or educate… and there are no questions “too dumb” to ask. In a world of too much to do and too little time, I’ve watched her be at the bedside and comfort the ill and think nothing of staying late to catch up on charting. She is nurturing, kind, and a joy to be around. She is the nurse I would want for family and the nurse I hope to be one day. She was involved in nursing week and other committees for the betterment of the hospital and is an active part of her EMS squad. She’s completely deserving of this award and the honor that comes with it. In recognition of her exceptional dedication, teamwork and unwavering commitment to her patients and colleagues, she consistently goes above and beyond the expectations of her role, demonstrating a level of professionalism and selflessness that make a lasting impact on our team. She is always the first to volunteer for additional responsibilities and activities, willingly stepping up whenever extra help is needed. Whether its participating in unit activities, covering shifts, or supporting her coworkers, she can always be counted on to put the needs of the team first. She is also consistently willing to trade shifts, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. One example that truly reflects her commitment is that when night shift was critically short staffed, she moved to night with no hesitation ensuring both the patients and staff received the support they needed. Her

willingness to step in during challenging situations exemplifies her compassion, reliability, and leadership that define her outstanding care. Her positive attitude, strong work ethic, and genuine concern for others, make her an invaluable member of our team. She leads by example, inspires others around her, and consistently demonstrates what it means to provide exceptional patient care while supporting her colleagues.”

Misti has been a nurse since 1995 and has served Community Hospital for nearly 30 years, joining the organization in October 1996. Throughout her career, she has cared for patients in the Emergency Department, inpatient unit, and obstetrics, and also served in leadership roles. While she continues to support multiple areas of patient care, she especially enjoys working in the Emergency Department, where the fast pace and critical nature of the work align with her passion for helping others.

Her journey into healthcare began at an early age after learning CPR as a child. Later, an EMT and paramedic mentor encouraged her to pursue nursing school, setting her on a path dedicated to helping others. Known as a quiet leader, Misti is respected by colleagues for her clinical expertise, willingness to teach, and commitment to supporting patients and coworkers alike. Outside the hospital, she serves on the Beaver Valley Rural Fire and Rescue District EMS squad and helps train future nurses and EMTs.

"I was surprised and honored to receive this award," Misti said. "There are so many deserving people at Community Hospital, and I'm grateful to be part of the team."

Soderlund and her husband, Tracy, have one son, Brett. When she's not caring for patients, she enjoys traveling with Brett to Nebraska volleyball games across the country.

The Caring Kind Award, presented annually by the Nebraska Hospital Association, recognizes healthcare employees across the state who demonstrate exceptional care, service, and dedication. Each NHA member hospital and health system may nominate one employee who exemplifies compassion, teamwork, and service excellence in their role. Honorees, who have included hospital staff, trustees, and volunteers from diverse positions, all share a commitment to creating a positive work environment and enhancing patient care. This fall, Misti will be celebrated at the statewide Caring Kind Awards Luncheon in recognition of her outstanding contributions.
