Community Support and Matching Funds Help Raise Nearly $80,000 for Cancer Care

Dr. Benjamin George

McCook, Neb. — The Community Hospital Health Foundation is proud to announce the successful completion of a cancer care matching challenge launched during the October 11 Concert for Healthcare. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of community donors and the leadership of Dr. Benjamin George, Community Hospital’s Medical Oncologist and Hematologist, the initial $10,000 matching donation was quickly met.

To further amplify the community’s impact, the Community Hospital Health Foundation extended the matching challenge by matching the next $10,000 raised. As a result, the first $20,000 donated for cancer care was doubled. In total, $59,979.01 in community donations, combined with $20,000 in matching funds, generated nearly $80,000 in support for local cancer care initiatives.

Cancer care funds at Community Hospital support a wide range of needs that help patients receive high-quality care close to home. These funds assist with the purchase of treatment and clinical equipment, along with patient assistance services that help remove financial and logistical barriers to care. Cancer care funds also support services such as RestoringU, a specialized image recovery service, with community support and Foundation funding contributing to its initial development and implementation as part of broader cancer care services. In addition, cancer care funds contribute to future Cancer Center building expansion as Community Hospital prepares to add space to develop a true, fully integrated cancer center for the region.

“Successfully doubling the first $20,000 raised while mobilizing so many different avenues of support reflects the incredible compassion of our community,” said Jessica Bortner, Executive Director of the Community Hospital Health Foundation. “Because of your generosity, patients and families across our region will benefit from critical equipment, meaningful assistance services, and continued progress toward a fully integrated cancer center close to home.”

“I am grateful to everyone who contributed,” Dr. George said. “Every day, I see how cancer affects patients and families in many different ways. This support strengthens the full spectrum of cancer care our patients rely on—from advanced treatment and clinical services to supportive offerings like RestoringU that help patients navigate the challenges of treatment.”

The Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to all donors and supporters who contributed through the Concert for Healthcare, Ladies Night Out, the Southwest Nebraska Big Give, Community Hospital’s No Shave November Best Beard voting campaign, the Health Foundation Annual Appeal, and the YMCA Go Pink Fundraiser. Together, these collective efforts maximized the impact of community giving and strengthened cancer care resources for patients and families across the region.
