Dr. Benjamin George Joins Community Hospital’s Medical Oncology Team

Dr. Benjamin George

Community Hospital is pleased to welcome Dr. Benjamin George, a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist, to its cancer care team. With more than two decades of experience in oncology, including military medical service, Dr. George brings a deep commitment to patient-centered, personalized cancer care.

Originally from Delaware, Dr. George attended medical school at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia before serving in the U.S. Army for 11 years. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine before transitioning to Oncology. After leaving the military in 2013, Dr. George practiced in Colorado before transitioning to Nebraska to focus on rural healthcare, specifically cancer care.

“I was drawn to oncology because of the long-term relationships we build with patients,” said Dr. George. “Cancer care is unique because it allows us to walk with patients and their families through their journey. I’ve had patients invite me to graduations and birthdays—it’s that kind of connection that makes this work so meaningful.”

Dr. George was previously seeing patients in North Platte, but as he noticed more and more of his patients traveling from McCook, he realized the need for expanded oncology services locally. “I was seeing patients drive two or three hours just to get care. I knew I needed to be here full-time to provide accessible, high-quality oncology services to the region.”

With a passion for innovation in cancer treatment, Dr. George specializes in targeted therapies and immunotherapy, focusing on personalized medicine. “Cancer treatment has changed dramatically over the past two decades. Now, we don’t just treat cancer based on where it started; we look at its genetic mutations to find the most effective treatment. It’s about giving each patient the most precise care possible,” he explained.

Dr. George and the medical oncology team, including Nurse Practitioner Ellen Branham, are dedicated to growing Community Hospital’s Cancer Center and expanding outreach efforts to ensure more patients have access to quality cancer care. As the only comprehensive cancer center in the region offering both chemotherapy and radiation therapy on-site, Community Hospital is committed to providing compassionate, innovative care close to home. The team follows the same national treatment guidelines used at major cancer centers, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care without having to travel far.

Patients seeking oncology or hematology care with Dr. George need a referral from their primary care provider. Contact Community Hospital at 308-344-8285 or visit chmccook.org for more information.
